Vegetable Garden in a Bag

I wanted to show you all my veggie garden done in IKEA shoe and sweater storage bags. This is our first year in our new home and we are still working on the yard.

Hubby is digging the pond, changing the elevation in the yard, and moving lots of dirt.

I didn’t want to put in a permanent garden that would be disrupted and moved again next year. So the Garden in a Bag is what I decided on.

I headed to IKEA to pick up the items I needed.

Then had my son go get me a scoop of top soil.

 Fill the bags with dirt.

And plant!

I picked tomato varieties that I have never heard of or tried before.
Omars Lebanese
Pilgirm
Better Bush
Big Zac
Abe Lincoln
Mountain Fresh
Old Fashion Goliath
Porter House

Cucumbers

Yellow and Red Peppers and Radish Seeds

 Zucchini Squash
Yellow Squash
Lettuce

Green Bean Seeds

I also picked up these garden markers at IKEA. I will have to give the containers more organic MOO POO than a normal garden, but It was easy and will be rewarding once it starts producing.

I was even smart enough to put the garden right beside the hose and compost bin.

  4. Wow! this would be great for a deck or a condo, too! I love it. I never in a million years would have thought to use bags. But, the cotton lets the dirt “breath” and the water drain. Brilliant! Great idea.

  7. Love your container gardening idea!!! I am an avid container gardener… there are some really neat ideas in a post i recently did on container gardening on my blog. I am new to blogging but not to gardening…lol. Did you poke holes in the bottom of your bags for drainage or will they drain thru the bags fabric?? I have wanted to try potatoes in a bag but have not tried that one yet.

  8. This is such a great idea, having a veggie garden that is mobile ๐Ÿ™‚ Thanks for sharing.

  9. Fabulous idea! What a great garden you have (and WILL eventually have!). I was thinking of using the big blue Ikea bags for potatoes as we’ve run out of ground space.

  10. Love this ! Great idea. We are still working on our back yard. This year I’m putting in a couple new gardens in the ground. I still have a few things growing in pots on the deck. The bags are great. We went to the nursery and got the old pots from when they plant trees to use. Going to check if I can follow you. It will be fun to see your back yard grow !!! 44. I am interested in your idea of planting in bags. I would really like to know how it worked as the summer progressed. Were you able to keep up the plants? Did they have enough soil to give you a yield? How did you stake the tall plants in bags? I am interested in the rest of your experience with the plants in bags.

    1. Cindy, it worked out perfect. The only thing that got stakes was the cucumber plants because I trellised them. They had plenty of soil, I did water them every day from the hose and they yielded the same amount as planted directly into the soil. No weeding too, that’s a big plus. I am doing it again this year ๐Ÿ™‚

  45. That is good to know. I live in the south, so it is very hot here in the summer, but this might work as a way for me to get things growing in the early spring. Excellent thinking outside of the box idea!
