The Parthenon of Nashville
What the Parthenon in Tennessee????
You heard right. There is a Parthenon replica in Nashville Tennessee.
We hit this awesome place on our drive home from Franklin. It wasn’t open on Sunday, so we were only able to see the outside.
A full-scale replica of the original Parthenon in Athens, Greece, Nashville’s Parthenon is a monument to a pinnacle of classical architecture.
Originally built in 1897, the Parthenon stands proudly as the centerpiece of Centennial Park, Nashville’s premier urban park. The re-creation of the 42-foot statue Athena is the focus of the Parthenon just as it was in ancient Greece. It was built for Tennessee’s Centennial Exposition to celebrate 100 years of Tennessee’s statehood.
The building and the Athena statue are both full-scale replicas of the Athenian originals. The Parthenon also serves as the city of Nashville’s art museum. The focus of the Parthenon’s permanent collection is a group of 63 paintings by 19th and 20th century American artists.
Hi Dawn, I’ve only seen this from the outside, too. I have a love of classical architecture, and I’d love to make a trip back to Nashville just to go inside. Doesn’t look like I’m going to make it to Greece to see the original anytime soon!
Thanks for the history lesson. I did not know that was there and I have been to Nashville several times. Sorry I missed it, I would have loved to see it.
Our son took us to that when we visited him in Nashville on one of our first trips there. Hard to believe that is in Nashville.

My mom grew up in Nashville, so I checked with her just now on the Parthenon. There is a museum inside with paintings, statues and other art. She said that there is a downstairs/basment with more art. She said that there are casts from the original Elgin Marbles there, too. She said that Nashville was sometimes called the “Athens of the South” because of the number of colleges/universities/schools that are there.
Hmmm, I didn’t see that when I was there.
