Today is a bittersweet day for me, it is the morning my parents left to head south for the winter. Our guest home is now empty, and I will be taking my morning walk with just our dog. I hate to be stingy and keep them all year long, but it sure would be nice. They no long like Michigan winters and retreat to a warmer climate every October. We sat around last night and ordered pizza as our final meal together until next spring. They will be within walking distance to the rest of our family while in the south, so you see why I can’t demand they spend all their time in Michigan, I have to share. I will establish a new routine for winter and readjust how my time is spent but they will be dearly missed. Now it’s time to quit the crying and get on with my day.

You wouldn’t be you if you weren’t sad. Just remember the happy times during the summers. Why don’t you plan a trip to wherever they are? Sounds like it would be a nice break from a Michigan winter!

Ann, we used to go down every winter for a visit, but it just hasn’t worked out the last 2 years.

Oh, I’m so sorry, Dawn. It sure must be hard to say goodbye to your parents. Can you give yourself a treat today? Something just for you? You deserve it.

Claudia, today I walked in the rain and cried. I figured the tears would mix with the rain drops and know one would question what was wrong:(

Oh Dawn…I hope you feel better as the days go by…it is so heartwarming that you have such a wonderful and close relationship with your parents…..My dad had passed away over 20 years ago and I miss him every day…and my mom is with my sister in Florida, where it is warm….When we retire, my hubby want to go back to Florida, the Sunshine State…Have a wonderful weekend Dawn! Love the pic!

Shirley thank you for the kind words, it means so much just to express my feelings and read everyones comments. My parents are in Florida too.

We live in Michigan (Traverse City) also … but I am blessed to have my mom living full-time near us. Lost my dad over 25 years ago and not a day goes by that I don’t think about him. My two sisters live in other parts of USA and they miss our mom, getting to see her for short snippets. I can understand how you will miss them … but might be good to go and visit them (as well as your siblings) if our winter gets too long! Beautiful picture on this post … thanks for sharing. Linda

Hi, I’m sorry for you that your parents are leaving for a warmer climate. At one point it looked like our oldest daughter and her family would be moving out of Colorado; the idea of having our girls in different states was hard for me and I knew that hubby and I would have to split time between our two daughters. I’m thankful our oldest stayed here. I know it must be hard on you! Love the photo you shared.
    Hugs, Noreen

Noreen, I can’t imaging my kids moving away but I know that time is coming soon, it’s bad enough to see my parents go.

Dawn, I can understand why you would feel sad. It probably takes a little getting used to your new routine without them around. How special, though, that you get the summers with them! ๐Ÿ™‚

    • says

Susan, Thank for the kind words, I am needing them right now.

  7. says

Oh Dawn – I completely understand. My parents go south for a month after Christmas — and I SO miss them. They don’t live WITH us, only NEAR us, but never the less! We are very close, and I miss them like crazy when they’re gone!

    • says

Sally, I am lucky to have my parents right on our property in our guest house. They will go south for 8 months:( which is a long time.

    Hi Dawn,
IT is so special that you have the summer months when it is so gorgeous to be in Michigan with your parents. I know it is hard to say good bye but only for a short time and then they will be back again. My mom lives in Florida now and was a snowbird from Michigan for many years. I always hated when she left up here to go down for the winters too. Now that she is year round down there I miss her too but I know she has a nice life down that way and many friends. Glad your parents are still snow birds and come home for the summers. Hope the as the day goes on you feel better.

    • says

Elma, Once it starts getting cold here they are ready to head south. No snow for them. LOL

It’s so nice to see you and your mother are so close. Both of you are lucky to have one another.

Thank you Brenda and I agree we are very luck!

Oh sweet girl, I am so sorry that you have to say goodbye for a few months.
Oh, and I wanted to tell you, I do still hang my clothes every day. But we got way behind when Nana was ill, and then had so much to do at once. So the dryer was kind of missed. But usually, not at all.
LOVE to hang my britches in the breeze!!

Kris, I was wondering if you weather had really changed. Glad you still have warm todays to dry by:)

I am the opposite of you.

After being away for 9 years, my daughter has just found a job with a fantastic world renowned company based in our town and is moving home. Steve and I were just talking about how nice it will be to have her for join us for Sunday night dinner. And, if things work out, she will be in a duplex on our street until she can buy a place of her own.

Hope you get to visit your parents.

    • says

Carol, you are so lucky:) Enjoy all the time you can together.

Hi Dawn, Sorry I didn’t get back to you about the graphics. Since you don’t do Typepad, I decided to try to work by myself with the help of tutorrials from the typepad team. Hope you’re feeling better today. It’s great that you’re so close to your parents. It’s difficult to say goodbye to family even if it’s only for a short time.

    • says

Sandy, so glad you are figuring it out. Can’t wait to see what you come up with.

  14. says

I’m thinking of you, girl. It will take a little time to adjust, for sure.
I lost both Mom & Dad last winter, I miss them so much.
