Kendall Charcoal The Perfect Neutral Gray Paint Color
It’s time for a change, a change of color for my exterior doors. I’ve had the same color for 6 years now and it was getting sun faded and just needed a pick me up. I chose Benjamin Moore Kendall Charcoal and do think it is the perfect, neutral gray. I’m in hopes we have time to pressure wash the house and change the stain color still this summer and I’m planning on going with a light gray stain and the doors will go perfectly.
The color I already had on the door, Sherwin Williams Roycroft Bottle Green, is very similar to to the new color it just has the green undertone removed. I have picked several door colors but for some reason everyone thinks if you live in a log home you have to have green doors and a green roof.
Well I am always one of those people that go against the grain. The traditional hunters green just wouldn’t due for me. I figured since I don’t have rooms to paint I can change the door color whenever the mood strikes me.
I forgot how much I hate to paint, especially something tedious like doors. There’s lots of areas to cut in and that makes it time consuming. Originally the 9 light had a cream boarder, well that’s for the birds. It takes to much time and to much work so the door is a solid color this time around.
See not a big change and I bet no one notices but I know it looks fresh and clean again. One door down and 7 more to go. My goal it to paint one a day until the project is done.
I like the color so much I may paint my green bar stools with it and look for some gray slipcovers. I know it’s a subtle change but it works for me.
We use Benjamin Moore paint and love it. We’ve just finished the kitchen, dining room, living room and 3rd bedroom. We love earthy tone colours. Your door looks great.
Linda, I’m a Sherwin Williams fan but just didn’t have the time to swing in there so thought I would try something new, and I am pleased 🙂
Love this shade of gray, Dawn, and it looks so great with your galvanized buckets! It’s warming back up here (95) so I hope you have some cooler days to finish your painting!
Jane, Wow 95 I don’t know how you do it. Was was 50 here this morning and will warm up to about 77. I’m heading out to do some planting while it’s cool. Then hope to do more painting.

Laurel, you’re right it did make it shine again. I didn’t realize how much the sun had dulled it until I started painting.

Jeanette, that’s the great thing about this gray color there is no strange undertone so it is completely neutral.

I’m thinking about changing our front door to gray, too and I want new shutters built.

I know what you mean about hating to paint, I love to decoratively paint but painting walls and doors and such is such a snore for me. I would like to change up the door color of my studio but it is going to be a big challenge unless I leave the window lights the original white and just paint the rest of the door the color. Hmmm, that might work. I am not typically a fan of gray but yours looks lovely.

Bobbie, I cut it all in with a paint brush, so it took some time but no paint leakage that way. Next on my list is to get new doors, I’ve never liked them.
How did you get the sheen on your door… or is that just paint from the can? It is beautiful.

Was gorgeous. We now live in a log cabin and absolutely love it. We sandblasted and stained it last year and it looks like something out of a magazine. I agree with you about the hunter green and so chose to do black for door and window grills. Have 26 windows to do still, but I know it will get done.
Jenn, I painted our exterior doors with it. I still have white kitchen cabinets and just can’t seem to find another color that I love like the white. We need to pressure wash our cabin and have it rechinked and restained which we planned on doing yet this fall but now so sure we’ll get to it. Is the home you have shown in the photo a log cabin? I love it btw.
I love the grey. I would love to have someone give me color advice on the inside of my house. I am at a loss.
Merna if you live near a Sherwin Williams they normally have someone on staff that will come to your house and do that for you.
You inspired me! My husband asked me what I wanted for my Birthday and I said PLEASE paint my front door and this weekend it happened in Kendall Charcoal and it is perfect! I originally wanted a blue and bought “Sea Salt” and it looked like washed out toothpaste. Then I started to see Kendall Charcoal and your door came up on Pinterest! A sign! I was also looking at BM wrought iron and when I showed my neighbors they all picked this colour and said the wrought iron was too dark. My husband is presently on the second coat and it gets nicer by the minute. Perfect for my Modern farmhouse style and brick house. Thank you for sharing your home and paint choice.
