Peacock Chalk Paint on Upholstery

Peacock Chalk Paint LoveSeat | Chalk Paint Through a Spray Gun | Turquoise Decor | Bright Color Decor | CreativeCainCabin.comHubby and I made a stop into Habitat for Humanity last week to pick up a window for the chicken coop so as long as we were there we took the time to look around.

Peacock Chalk Paint LoveSeat | Chalk Paint Through a Spray Gun | Turquoise Decor | Bright Color Decor | CreativeCainCabin.comI spotted this, as hubby calls it UGLY, love seat in perfect condition and they were having a half off sale. Of course I said load her up, and hubby looked at me like I was crazy. I told him after I was done he wouldn’t recognize it and it was for the dog to sleep on anyway so he didn’t have to like it or sit on it. I keep one piece of furniture around for the dog and her wing back chair was in desperate need of being replaced. I certainly wasn’t about to buy a new piece of furniture so this would be perfect.

It actually makes into a twin bed if need be. Well the color wasn’t for me it actually blended into our log walls and it was sorta creepy thinking there may be hospital germs on it, I know I sound like a germaphobe but painting it would make it all better. I had some chalk paint at home and knew it could be used on upholstery so my plan was coming together perfectly.

The color I used was Peacock by Waverly. I purchased it at Walmart in the craft section, it took 2-8oz bottles to complete the project. Here’s a tip if you decided to use chalk paint through a sprayer I recommend mixing 1oz of water to 8oz of paint. It thins it just enough to push it through. Chalk paint is thick and need’s a little watering down to be used in a sprayer. And it dries so fast you can paint and have your project back in the house and use it within the hour.

So far she is enjoying it and it gives her more room than a chair. Hubby and one of our employees carried it into the house for me and they were quite impressed with the finish, they said they’d have never guessed it was paint, it felt and looked just like fabric. Voila success!

  1. Oh my, what a change. I would never of thought of painting furniture. Does it change the texture of the fabric and will it crack with the dog getting on and off?

    1. Linda, the texture feels just like fabric and no cracking with chalk paint.

  2. I also wanted to know about the cracking. Do you know if it will do that? I looks great, Dawn. xo Laura

    1. Laura, no it won’t crack if you use chalk paint. Now regular paint I do belive would because it’s not as pliable.

  3. Ok, this is the second time I’ve heard of someone painting an upholstered piece. I am really curious how it holds up. Would love an update in a few months. It looks great. I think you have one lucky dog.

    1. Becky, I think if it was human use it will hold up for a long time, but the dogs nails may be a factor. I will keep an eye on it and let you know.

    1. Shirley, she was all ready to try it out, lol.

  4. Oh my gosh what a great color…good job!

    1. Thanks Ann, it’s actually not a bad piece once I changed the color. I think it would be great in a kids room or a dorm room.

  5. Your dog is very lucky. Love the color.

    1. Ann, she thinks she’s human so why not her own love seat. LOL

What a beautiful color Dawn. Smart of you to see past the old color too. Nice size for your dog to stretch out on. Kathleen in Az

    1. Kathleen it’s the perfect size she doesn’t have to curl up anymore.

  7. That is so gorgeous, what a great idea Dawn! Hard to believe it could be done in a hour!

    1. Rondell, I hate to paint so the sprayer is the only way to go. Not only is it fast, but the chalk paint dries so quickly it makes for an easy project. And that’s just the way I like it.

      1. Hey Dawn
I’m getting ready to paint my
Antique sofa in my salon. I’ve used chalk paint to paint all of my stylist stations and glaze them. I make my own chalk paint which is equal parts latex paint, water and desanded grout. Do you think that will work as well as store bought chalk paint?

        1. Tracee, I’ve also made my own chalk paint and yes it will work just fine.

  8. Dawn – What an awesome job you did! I would have never thought about spray painting it. Painting – yes, but not spray painting. I have slept on several of those in the hospital in the last few years and trust me, if you don’t want company staying too long, let them sleep on that! LOL They are awful to sleep on. Very comfortable to sit on tho.

    Great job!

    Judy

    1. Judy, I will have to refer to it as the Mother In Law’s sleeping spot then. LOL

    1. Martina, she hopped up right after the photo shoot, LOL.

    1. Thank you Paige ๐Ÿ™‚ The dog loves her new spot.

  12. Dawn, all we need to see now is a picture of the lucky girl taking advantage of her new leisure spot, lol.

    1. Debbie she sits there every day and loves her love seat.

I have outdated floral fabric on my seat and back cushions on my sunroom bamboo type furniture . Would you try the fabric chalk paint on these cushions. They are in perfect condition as They don’t get sat on too often. Would you also recommend painting the bamboo style frame and if so what type of paint for those?

    1. Inga I just used regular chalk paint, it wasn’t made specifically for fabric and it held up great. I’ve never tried painting bamboo so I’m not sure what would work.

  14. Inga Zahodnik says:

Thanks for your reply. Does it leave the fabric soft and comfortable to sit on?

    1. Inga yes the fabric feels like leather now.

    1. Elizabeth I guess if it’s really dirty I’d wipe it down with TSP or if it has a buildup of wax on it but I did nothing special to mine.
