Gazing Ball Container Garden
I’ve never owned a gazing ball but have always admired them so for Mother’s day this year I purchased myself 2 in a pretty turquoise color (in keeping with the porch colors) and knew I wanted to use them in my whiskey barrel containers.
I like the reflection they give off at night in the moonlight and the pop of color they give to the barrel. They also take up a good amount of space so not as many flowers are needed to fill the container.
I still have the cypress plant that I purchased last winter, but I’m not to sure I like it, but hated to just dig it out and pitch it, so for now it’s staying. It actually looks better decorated for winter than summer.
The barrels are so versatile for decorating, and I never seem to get tired of them. I like that you can buy liners for them now. It keeps the wood from rotting and you also don’t need as much dirt. I did learn after the first season to drill several holes in the bottom for drainage. We had a heavy downpour and my plants were saturated, I actually had to take a long drill bit and drill through the dirt and all to relieve the water.
Yep that’s me you see in the gazing ball reflection, I wish I could remove myself and just have the cabin reflecting it it but that would require too much photo editing. So there I am….. Do you have a gazing ball in your garden?

Yes I actually have 3 gazing balls, 2 made with bowling balls and flat gems and one is a spry painted mirror gazing ball. I love them in the garden. The sun reflects of the gem ones and the reflections in the other are amazing. Yours look lovely in the container.

I love the gazing ball in your barrel, very pretty. I have a large green one sitting on a pillar in the front yard. Two small ones with gem stones and the other one with broken tiles in the backyard ( my sister made them for me ). On top of my hutch in the kitchen, I have a small green one on top of a clear milk bottle. Kathleen in Az
Sooo pretty! I didn’t really want a gazing ball until now. And who knew you could get liners for whiskey barrels? Not me! Thanks for that useful info.. off to find whiskey barrel, liner and gazing ball soon! I have missed my visits here. Dawn, you are always so inspiring!

Dawn, I had no idea that they made liners for whiskey barrels! I have had one in our yard for about 5 years now. It covers a stump that was left when we had a tree removed. So far, it doesn’t appear to be rotting but I will look for one of those liners. I’ve never had a gazing ball but have thought about making one using an old bowling ball. Your turquoise balls are such a pretty color!

I have one that is purple Dawn..I got it and it’s pedestal at a flea market for a good price..I have a few old bowling balls that I want to make into gazing balls also..

I love gazing balls in the garden, but mine fell off of its stand when Lulu got a little rambunctious. You just gave me an idea for adding one to my old wheelbarrow where it can’t be knocked off.

Hi Dawn! I’m seeing your gazing ball post and am thrilled to see a different way to use them other than the usual stand. I was recently given a pretty purple one that had no stand.It’s neck has been broken so I felt it would have to be used w/o a stand unless I glued it to the base….I would rather use it in a container with pretty plants as you did here and will be doing just that! Thanks for all the inspiration!
