Photographing Interiors….My New Job

Farmhouse KitchenHappy Sunday everyone! I’ve been keeping my new job a secret from y’all for a couple of months now and thought today was the day I’d let you in on what it is…..Drum Roll…..I’m photographing homes interiors and exteriors for a realtors website. I absolutely love the work and so enjoy seeing inside so many wonderful home, and not so wonderful homes. I’m so intrigued by how people decorate. My first photo shoot had me pretty nervous I wasn’t sure what to expect but it turned out great and once I was behind the camera I fell into my natural rhythm and had a blast.

PorchLet me tell you, I’m getting a true eye opener with home styles. I’ve photographed everything from a designer home that looks like it was staged for a magazine to a house that I was sure belonged in a horror movie, cobwebs and all. Some of the rundown homes I’ve been in have so much potential my wheels are always turning. I think to myself if I could just buy the place and work my magic this home could be a show stopper.

CottageI’ve also met some amazing people. They are all so friendly and welcome me into their homes for a tour before I begin shooting. So far I’ve only photographed one home where no one was there. I used a passcode and a key to get in. That made me feel a little strange and I felt like I was invading their space. I always make sure and take off my shoes before entering and greet everyone with excitement. One home I photographed had a huge Moose head hanging on the wall right when I walked in and I about jumped out of my flip flops. You would think I would be used to such things but from the way the house looked on the outside that’s not what I was expecting to find on the inside.

BathroomI’ve also become truly amazed at what people are thinking when they know a photographer is coming. For me there wouldn’t be a thing out of place, but others have that lived in look and are fine with me photographing the space as is. I’ve also learned to edit out anything personal that shows up in photos. I edit out family portraits and such, I feel those shouldn’t be exposed on the web just for safety sakes. Also if it’s a kids room and they have the child’s name on the wall I remove that from the photos.  It’s a scary world out there and I wouldn’t want to jeopardise the child in any way.

KitchenI’ve been using the extra cash to purchase new camera lenses…..just what I need right? I start by renting them for 10 days and if I fall in love with it I make the purchase. My new love affair is with this lens the Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II, it is amazing for taking whole room shots. I love it so much it’s my standard walk around lense now. If I could only own one this would be the one I would pick.

So that’s what’s been keeping me busy these days and I’m enjoying every minute of it.

I’m not at all surprised you have landed a photography job, your blog photos are so sharp and beautiful.
I have to say it does surprise me when people who want to sell their homes leave it
looking like they just got up from eating and walked away, especially for photos!

Kim I so know what you mean. I have seen it all now. There are times I want to clear the countertops before taking photos but that’s not my job so I just do what Im told. Why would they want their house to look so bad when they’re trying to sell is beyond me.

This is so exciting. I love each of the pictures you showed.

I see houses on the street and wish someone would just put a little love into them. I always wonder what the story is behind a rundown house.

    Have fun!

Carol I have seen some with very strange paint colors in every room and some houses just filled with garbage. It always amazes me how people live.

Congratulation, Dawn. This job sounds just perfect for you. I can see you taking it a step further in the future and staging the homes that look like they need help. You’d be so good at that too with your great eye.

Susan I thought about that too but then decided I didn’t want to end up having to move heavy furniture and break my back.
