Home Office Reveal

Home Office Reveal With Desk Positioned in the Middle of the Room & Extra Storage Space Using Origami Shelves and Decorative Storage Boxes

I finally have taken the time to turn my office into a space I’m crushing on right now. For those of you who don’t know hubby and I own an environmental company and I work in the office from home which means lots of stuff that has to be kept and stored for years.

I’ve never truly been happy with this space until now. The two things I was never thrilled with was the desk placement, and the storage issue. I’ve always admired photos of desks that float in the middle of the room with space around it instead of being mashed up against a wall and the dilemma of how to make storage look pretty and planned is another issue.

Well one night while lying awake (I have a lot of those types of nights now that I’m in the beginning stages of menopause) I flipped on the TV and it happened to be on a shopping channel that was showing a storage shelf system called Origami. I’m not sure if it was lack of sleep or what it was that possessed me to buy but I did and am so glad. The shelves are a bit pricey but worth every penny. There’s no assembly required which makes it a hit in my book and it’s on wheels. I will definitely be making another purchase when I need more storage shelves.

So anyway I decided to move my desk in front of the double window with enough room between the window and the desk for me to clean the windows and run the vacuum on the floor. Let me just say I would have never though such a small move would make such a big difference in the room’s appearance. It looks like a whole new space. Finally the room looks planned out, not just random office equipment all over the place. The big MAC computer is used for blogging and the smaller one on the shelving rack is the MAC I use for our business. I used to keep the computers side by side on the one desk and I always hated the look. Now I can add a few pretty, yet functional touches to the unused space on my desk.

In the large decorative box I keep my camera, movies I’m currently watching, and a few office supplies. I like that they are still close when I need them but I don’t have to look at a cluttered mess it can be stashed away in a pretty box.

I was feeling a little artistic when I added the lamp; I opted for no shade and a large Edison bulb to give it the look of an art piece instead of the expected lampshade.

By the way did you happen to notice I found a place for my new miter saw on the bottom shelf? Now it’s in a handy spot when I’m ready to use it. On the wall opposite the desk is the picture shelf I just made featuring my sons artwork when he was a kid.

    1. Diane my hubby made it for me in the size I wanted and I recover the top with fabric and a clear fabric mat whenever I need a change. The legs are from IKEA.

  3. Looks lovely and efficient Dawn, the desk by the window gives you the needed light and a place to gaze when you are thinking 🙂

    1. Linda I wanted the desk facing the other way but I couldn’t see the computer screen with the glare from the window so I had to turn it around.

  6. Facing the window is brilliant! Now you can enjoy natural light and the beauty of the outside while you work. I love the juxtaposition of your warm woods with the more industrial feel of the desk and shelving. Lovely, functional room. Well done.

    1. Carolyn thank you so much a log home is so hard to decorate if the lodge look isn’t your thing and it’s not mine. I have found that earthy tones look better so I have to quit fighting it and go with what works best.

  7. My office is in desperate need of a make over and I will get it done as soon as I am done with the taxes. I am determined to be ahead of the game this year. Plus I have 1099s I am already late on getting out. booo. Love your space.
I like my desk facing out the big windows so I can look up from my work and see my garden (when it isn’t under white stuff). In winter I like watching the birds coming to the feeder. That reminds me I need to go fill it today.

    1. Pam good idea I should place my hummingbird feeder so I can see it from my office window. I just put all our employees W2’s in the mail this week and did our quarterlys. I hate this time of year….there’s always so much to do when you own a business.

  8. I love it!

I like the lamp with just the bulb. I have a lamp that might just work with an Edison bulb and no shade. Thanks for the idea.

    1. Carol, I can’t wait to see if it will work for you 🙂

    1. Kathleen yes my best ideas come to me in the middle of the night. I normally have to add them to my reminder page of my phone too or they’re lost before morning, lol.

  10. I am so envious Dawn. SUPER CUTE. Love the black and white theme as well. Someday when I grow up I will have an office.
For now, I have the end of the kitchen table, half of the closet, half the bathroom and half the bed. : – ) Oh but then again the laundry room in the basement is all mine!!!! : – ) winky winky

    1. LOL Debbie I love that you have the whole laundry room to yourself and I bet you have to do the laundry too?? I decided black and white never go out of style so I will stick with that for the main things and add a few pops of color when Im ready for something new. Right now I’m using the turquoise and rust for accent colors.

  11. Dawn, your new office space looks amazing! Banishing clutter clears the mind, doesn’t it? We do have an office but it is long overdue for a reorganizing spree! Plus, I have been blogging from a laptop but I’m thinking about switching to a desktop just so I can view things on a LARGE monitor! We have a desktop in the office but it’s dedicated to running the radio station. (Can’t touch it, if you know what I mean! )

    1. Jane you have no idea how many things I’ve accomplished by just organizing the office. I’m a mad woman on a mission now and since I never sleep 🙁 I have plenty of time to get things done. I love my 32″ monitor and can’t see well enough to use a laptop. Maybe Leo can keep up with the laptop and you can get a new desktop.

  12. So great to see where you “create” and work…..it is certainly a very beautiful and cheery space!….Love it and all of the pretty and creative details!
