Side Porch And A Dog Update

Log Home Summer Porch

Side porch sittin is where I’ve spent a lot of time lately. It’s been 3 1/2 weeks since our pooch’s injury (torn ACL) and the side entrance with two steps seems the easiest for her to manage. The front porch only has 3 steps but apparently that one extra is more than she can do. So when I let her out I sit and read until she musters up the strength to manage the steps and come back inside.

IMG_0419Up until that last few days she’s only went out to use the bathroom. She takes 5 steps and sits down, and repeats the process until she gets to her destination. I’ve counted it’s always 5 steps. She’s also lost a substantial amount of weight, I think the pain meds had much to do with her lack of appetite and also an animal knows if they eat they have to use the bathroom, and I think it was more than she wanted to take on.

Cola PlanterI started a calendar and wrote down every time she ate and how much. I was watching closely making sure it wasn’t dangerous for her, she did continue to drink so I know that’s more important than food. As of the last 3 days she’s made a remarkable turn, she’s walked the whole yard only sitting down a few times and even jumped into her loveseat twice. We don’t let her climb the loft stairs into our room yet (which she hates) but I don’t need her to undo the healing that’s happened up to this point.

Log Home Summer PorchI’m really praying it was minor and once it’s healed completely and she gets the remainder of the weight off she’ll be back to new. I know she’s feeling better because she started carrying around one of her baby’s again, when she’s happy a baby is always with her.

Red Hunter BootsI must say I sure have got a lot of reading under my belt in the last 3 weeks and I’ve quite enjoyed the quiet time spent with a good book and the lovely landscape around me, it sure has been peaceful.

    1. Kathleen I think we’ve decided to put a baby gate at the bottom of the stairs so she won’t be able to get up them. It breaks my heart but it’s best for her to not re-injure it. I’ve added a bet on the main level for her so she can sleep at the bottom of the stairs, it makes me sad but it’s what’s best for her.

  8. Glad to here your dog is improving. Good news. So glad she is recovering in the warm summer months too. Winter would have been dreadful for her.

    1. Kris thanks for stopping by, it seems we only chat on Instagram these days ๐Ÿ™‚ Yes it’s hard on us all with the dog but we are seeing improvement every week. It will be 4 weeks tomorrow since the injury and it may take up to 5 weeks to heal but she may always walk with a limp.
