Emptying Cupboards So They Can Be Moved

Oragami Shelf In the KitchenDo you remember my post awhile back about discovering my cupboards had been installed 4″ lower than standard height? Well I’d been asking hubby to move them up for me, and all I got was “THE LOOK”, you know the one that says are you kidding me? I finally stopped asking because he told me it was to much work and he didn’t have time right now for it.

Juice GlassesThen I had another brilliant idea (insert lightbulb here!!) about adding beadboard as a backsplash. It’s what I wanted to do when we built the cabin but everyone gave me a thumbs down when I mentioned it. Well I decided I don’t care what everyone else thinks it’s what I’ve wanted and it’s my kitchen!

Oragami Shelf In the KitchenI asked hubby what he thought about adding the beadboard and he said yes it could be done and while I’m at it I’ll raise the cupboards. Yipeeee! I was all over that idea, so we headed off to Lowes to get the beadboard and of course the brown electrical switches and outlets wouldn’t look good against white beadboard so we picked up white so everything would match. (This project is sounding bigger and bigger the more I think about it).

Ikea GlassesI quickly went and got my Origami storage shelf and cleared everything out of the upper cupboards and have it stored on the wire shelf for now. I’m so glad I’m organized and don’t have cabinets full of clutter, it took no time at all to unload them.

I really wanted to paint the cabinets while hubby has them off the wall, but he doesn’t have time for that so I’ll take what I can get. It’s no problem to paint them after they’re up again, so that’s what I’ll do. I decided to keep them the same color just go with a different paint finish. Currently they’re painted with SW Dover in Satin, but I purchased it in a Semi-Gloss this time. It will be easier to keep clean I think, and for the island I still haven’t decided on wether to paint it the same color or go with a dark gray.

I’ll be back soon to show you the final project.

    1. Melissa I’ve always been a fan of white kitchens I think they just feel cleaner. I’ve always loved the color I have in there so why change it and risk having to paint it all over again when I like what’s there. Maybe I’m just being safe but I’ve liked it for 7 years so far so I’m sticking with it.

    1. Shirley glad to hear you think the beadboard will look good, I’m not sure why all my friend turned their noses up at the idea.

The white bead board will brighten up the cabin too. Have you made up your mind about the kitchen stools?

    1. Kathleen I agree about the beadboard. I have the stool stained and will show them as soon as my kitchen is back in order.

  7. So excited for you to have the cabinets raised and get a beadboard backsplash. I love beadboard and white kitchens, too. Did you buy the beadboard sheets or real beadboard? You’ll find the semi-gloss paint washes up much better.

    1. Jen We had to do the bradboard sheets our logs are to uneven to do the slats. Today the cupboards are down and it’s turning into a big project. I really like the look of no upper cupboards but better put them back up so hubby doesn’t have to do it again down the road, lol.
