Chicken Feeder Decor

Do you remember earlier this spring when I had the vintage chicken feeder planted with flowers? It was beautiful while it lasted, but no matter what I did I just couldn’t keep the flowers thriving. I kept them watered well, fertilized them, and gave them partial sun exposure but they just didn’t do well planted in the feeder so I went to plan “B”, something I wouldn’t need to water or keep up with, rocks.

Hubby did an excavation job and removed a dump truck load of landscape rocks from the project, and I was the lucky receiver of the pile. Once I pulled the flowers out I looked around to find something to replace the empty space with and remembered the rocks that we had.

Let me tell you, rocks are much easier to maintain, LOL. Rather than throw the flowers out I planted them in a pot with other flowers on the deck in an attempt to save them. So far they don’t look any worse so maybe having more dirt and better water retention will do the trick.

Right now our deck is getting lots of activity, the weather is nice so I spend time every day outside reading on my iPad and watching all the birds do their thing. I’ve had a killdeer nest in the front yard that I’ve been mowing around for 3 weeks and just in the last few days the eggs have hatched and the birds have moved on.

I was quite amazed that the babies left the nest the same day they were born, I assumed a predator took them but once I Googled it I was wrong killdeer babies hatch and move on immedietly and are able to take care of themselves, no need for parenting. I had no idea, but I’m glad I found the nest in the yard and was able to add staked flags around in so I didn’t mow over it.

    1. Shirley we’ve been having a blast and the time sure goes quickly.

  1. I like how you redid the chicken feeder and that it still has a home on the deck. I’m glad you repotted the flowers and that they’re still alive. We had a large bird in a treed area of our property and every time I got near it with the mower it would chase after me – let me tell you, I had that mower at top speed and was screaming as I retreated!! My husband has been mowing that area for me ever since and said it didn’t come out the last time he mowed – so maybe they have moved on.

    1. Jen, LOL are you afraid of birds. I have a friend with a feather phobia so she hates birds.

      1. No, I’m not afraid of birds, but that grouse was crazy territorial – lol – really gave me a fright.
