DIY Garden Art Junk Trellis

IN NEED OF A TRELLIS? WHY NOT SEARCH ALL THOSE HIDDEN SPOTS ON YOUR PROPERTY, BASEMENT, BARN, OR GARAGE FOR THE PERFECT PIECE OF JUNK TO CREATE A DIY TRELLIS? THAT’S JUST WHAT I DID AND TURNED CRIB BED SPRINGS INTO JUST WHAT I WAS LOOKING FOR!

DIY Crib Spring Trellis, Junk Trellis for Climbing ClematisI have the worst luck with Clematis vine, I have no idea why they only seem to get about a foot tall and then no new growth. I must like to abuse myself in the gardening department because while shopping for plants to re-landscape our guest house two clematis plants jumped into my card again. I know, I know, if I haven’t had good luck with them in the past why am I giving them a go again? Good question, but I am!

DIY Junk Trellis Made From Old Crib Springs. Great For Those Climbing Garden PlantsI picked up a pretty solid pink variety and a pink and white flowered one. All the way home from the store I was thinking I’d need a trellis for them to grow up (if they actually take off). It was hot and I wasn’t in the mood to build something new so into my hidden junk storage I went in search of something that would work. I spied the old crib spring lurking in the corner and figured it would work and make the perfect junk trellis, with minimal hassle of putting it up.

Crib Spring Trellis For Junk Gardeners And Their Climbing PlantsAll it took was two screws and the trellis was in place. Now let’s hope they grow! If you have any Clematis advice you think may be helpful, leave it in the comment below. I have Clematis at our other house and all I did was plant it and it did it’s thing, yielding big beautiful climbing blooms but not such good luck at the cabin. I think it will look quite lovely if I they ever fill in and bloom.

  1. What “other house” do you have? Am I missing something?

    1. Pat, we also have a guest house on the property.

  2. Jeannie McBride says:

Clematis likes sun in the hair but shade on the feet. Love your cabin.

    1. Jeannie I just mulched them heavily so hopefully this will keep their feet cooler.

  3. In my experience Clematiis don’t do much of anything the first year, but for the second year and thereafter stand back. Maybe just give them some more time before becoming discouraged. They are worth the wait.

    1. Penny thank’s for the advice I’m hoping they do better this year.

  4. I’m surprised you have had such issues with your clematis, that’s a shame! I love them, I planted a bunch all over my property when I moved in 4 years ago. Good luck!

    1. Debbie I can’t grow Rhododendrons either they don’t like our soil so maybe thats the issue with the Clematis too.
