“The Cabin” in Country Woman Magazine
I’m excited to announce Creative Cain Cabin and Dolly Parton are both on the cover of Country Woman Magazine August/September 2014 Edition. Can you tell who’s who?? Wow I wish I looked as good as Dolly. Before I forget there’s a 4 page spread inside of our Colorful Diy Log Cabin Kitchen that hit’s the news stands Monday July 7, 2014. And here’s a little irony I just couldn’t pass up. Dolly and I were both married in the same wedding chapel in Tennessee, and now we are both on the same magazine cover. I’m getting a good chuckle here….Dolly and my paths are obviously meant to cross some day.
Let me tell you a little about how this whole process began. I got an email back in March from the Editor of Country Woman Magazine, stating they would like to run “The Cabins Kitchen” in their Fall edition. They have a regular feature called “My Country Kitchen” and they felt their readers would like a peek into our colorful cabins kitchen. I read the email and decided I would think about it and get back to her. Well the next day I received another email through my Photography Blog asking if I had got the original email. I sometimes like to think before I leap and after a few days I did reach out to her and arrange a phone interview.
Then next step was a call from the writer with a list of questions like the DIY process, the green factor, color choices, materials used, and favorite aspects of the kitchen. The interview took about an hour, and I was quite surprised how much she knew about me an my family. She obviously did her homework and read through several posts on the blog. We also discussed compensation, since they would be using all my photos. After that was negotiated and finalized I received an email from the Art Director with a list of photos they would like to use. This is where it’s important to always shoot in RAW….magazines can’t use poor quality photos, luckily for me that is how I shoot and was able to send them over high resolution photos for publishing.
A few perks besides being compensated are: Country Woman will promote the article on their FB fan page, the blogs URL would be listed in the article, and I would be given full photo credits. It sounds like the perfect gig to me ๐
The next step was an email of the written article. I was to read it and make sure there wasn’t any errors in our names or product descriptions. Once I gave it the thumbs up it was just a waiting game for it to come out on the news stands. So far I don’t have an actual copy ๐ Country Woman was in the middle of an office move and overlooked getting one out to me and the latest edition isn’t on the shelves where I live. I know several of you have emailed me saying you have seen the article and have the magazine, thank you everyone for letting me know. If you would like to see the digital version you can find it at Country Woman’s site. As for me I am anxiously awaiting for it to be in the stores here, it will be fun to see my kitchen in print.
I’m so thrilled for you, Dawn! Well-deserved, my friend. And you’ve passed on some valuable advice about taking photos, shooting in raw (something I still have to master) and all of steps that go into being in a magazine. I haven’t seen a copy around here yet, but I’m definitely going to keep my eye open.
Congratulations, my friend!

Bev, RAW is the shooting method where all the information is present allowing you to make any needed photo correction. In many cases you can turn a horrible photo into something great.
