How To Hide A Garden Hose

Do you have a creative way that you hide your garden hose? Here’s how I keep mine neat and tidy, out of the way, and looking like a decorative planter. I keep it stored in a whiskey barrel topped with a hanging Boston Fern.

Over the years I’ve tried all kinds of store bought contraptions for rolling up the hose and keeping it untangled but most of those things are made from plastic and only last a season around here. Not to mention they’re normal pretty pricey.

I decided years ago to find something that would last forever, could have multiple purposes, and wouldn’t add another plastic item to the recycle bin. I use whiskey barrel for lots of things around the cabin and had a few extras hanging around so I decided it would make the perfect storage space for the hose.

I made sure I carefully coiled it up when I first added it to the barrel so it wouldn’t tangle and it’s easy to put back in the same fashion after I use it. I even have room to hide a watering can on top of the hose and then plop the fern on that.

Some years I use the fern and some years I don’t. It depends on how many I purchase for the season. If I have an extra I use it. No one wouldn’t ever know I have 150 feet of hose stashed away in my little rustic barrel.

Most big box home improvement stores sell the barrels around here as well as tractor supply stores. I also see them for sale outside local breweries. If you live in wine country I bet you’ll be able to locate as many as you need. Make sure an drill a hole in the bottom if there isn’t already one. There’s nothing worse than after a good rain having your hose floating in the barrel. It’s gets pretty heavy once its full of water.
