Lowering the Exterior Doors

Part of the joys of living in a log home are that the exterior doors need an adjustment after the build process.  Log homes settle and need to have room over the doors and windows for the logs to come down. Most of the settling takes place in the first 4 years and we have been in our place for 5 so we knew it was time to move the last two doors. What you do is leave 4 inches of dead space above all the doors and windows for the logs to settle, if you don’t you will hear your windows one by one shatter over time. We were lucky and had none of that happen but it was time to finish this last step, remove the doors and lower them in the space.

 

Of course hubby waits until it’s 30 degrees and yanks the doors out of the house. I turned off the heat, no use in heating the outdoors, and stayed out of his way. I learned while we were building to just let him do the project the way he want’s and things go much smoother, I seem to get stuck with the clean up and the jobs no one likes to do. Speaking of those jobs, I was in charge of staining all the new trim boards. Because it was freezing outside, and quickly becoming that way inside, I had to do the staining inside. My island and dining table quickly became my work bench. I had to stain two different colors, one to match inside and one for outside. The cedar sucked the stain up fast so the whole project, including 2 coats of stain and one of poly took under an hour. 

 

 The worst part was the dust and mess, every time the wind would gust it blew the mess further into the house. I couldn’t get the vacuum going quick enough. I don’t like a messy house and projects like these drive me crazy before they are over, I know it all has to happen to get the job done, but I certainly never look forward to it. I do have to say the doors look great and we can check that off our to do list.
