Adding Electric To The Coop

Adding Electric To The Coop

I know this doesn’t sound like a big deal to most, but having electricity in the chicken coop is a huge advantage.  I’ve always used an extension cord during the early spring for keeping heat on the baby meat chickens but now that I have the ducks full time I needed a more permanent solution. If you remember, the coop was free, and the electrical panel and all the outlets were already in it so all hubby had to do was run the power source underground from the cabin to the coop and ... continue reading...

Venison Jerky Original Recipe

Venison Jerky Original Recipe

It’s deer hunting season here in Michigan and hubby and son have both taken one.  We do all of our own butchering, we turn the majority of the meat to steaks and chops and what’s left we use to make venison jerky.  They quarter the deer in our barn and then bring it into MY KITCHEN to cut up.  I’m not especially fond of that but it has to be done.  Once the process is over I give the kitchen good cleaning with bleach. Hubby and Son do the cutting while I package and ... continue reading...

My Embarrassing Potato Harvest

My Embarrassing Potato Harvest

Today I hang my head in shame sharing with you my potato harvest from this year.  I spent so much time nurturing the seed potatoes, going to the extra effort of fencing them in after I’d noticed the raccoon’s getting into them, and watering them when we had no rain. This is quite the embarrassing sight.  I was so excited to dump my feed sack bags and fork out a big harvest of delicious homegrown potatoes.  Well to my surprise I guess the raccoons got more than I thought they ... continue reading...

Exterior French Doors Painted In The Color Black Fox

Exterior French Doors Painted In The Color Black Fox

We’ve had unseasonably warm weather here in the north and I managed to squeeze painting the outside of the dining room French doors that were replaced recently.  If you missed seeing that you can catch up here. Once again I used what I had in my paint stash, not wanting to spend money on a new color and lets face it who really wants to go through the process of deciding on something new.  I always flip through the swatch samples and marvel over all the pretty colors and inevitably I ... continue reading...

Fall Decorating On The Walkout Basement Concrete Patio

Fall Decorating On The Walkout Basement Concrete Patio

We’ve hit an unseasonably warm patch here in Michigan for the past week so it gave me the opportunity to enjoy the last of my outdoor fall decorating. All you Michiganders know it can be 70 one day and snowing the next so I’m enjoying it while it lasts. I’m joining the Cozy Living Bloggers today to share with you the best of our November ideas. Our gracious host Jennifer from Town -N- Country Living puts this all together every month and is kind enough to include me. So please take the time ... continue reading...

How To Hide The Plastic Bird Seed Bag

How To Hide The Plastic Bird Seed Bag

Feeding the birds is something I haven’t done in years. I used to keep a feeder full all winter long but quit when we built the cabin. I didn’t have a spot to hang one from that was close enough for me to watch them and I didn’t want to place one hanging from our porch for fear of attracting mice. I certainly don’t want mice finding their way into our home. I still don’t have a close spot for the feeder but I decided maybe watching the birds would bring me some enjoyment again so I picked ... continue reading...
