Masterpiece Theater’s “The Paradise”
Has anyone started watching Masterpiece Theater’s new series “The Paradise?” I am not fond of most shows on TV these days even though we get hundreds of channels. I have always said I was born in the wrong era, I crave things from the past and am memorized by earlier days. Sunday night October 6th was the seasons premier. I must say I am liking it. The costumes and settings really grabbed my attention as well as the English accent. I was in need of something to tide me over until my beloved “Downton Abbey” returns.
The story revolves around the lives of the people who live and work in one of Britain’s glamorous first department stores “The Paradise”. I am assuming one may have lived where they worked back then, but it is a funny concept now. If you missed the season premier you can watch it here or catch one more run of it this afternoon (check local listings). I have my DVR set to record every episode, it looks like it runs from October 6- November 12, 2013.
Heres what you can expect: Denise Lovett may look the part of a country bumpkin when she arrives penniless and in search of work at the doors of The Paradise, Britain’s glamorous first department store. But before long, intoxicated by the potential of the modern world, she will turn her ambitious and inspired eye to the store’s ladieswear department, meanwhile catching the eye of the shop’s dashing and reckless owner, John Moray, a grieving widower with a secret. Enigmatic and shrewd, Moray embodies the modern era that he is ushering into the bustling Northern town in the form of petticoats and perfume. But what remains to be seen is whether those around him โ the pampered heiress who mistakes hooks for heart, the sinister store detective whose loyalty knows no bounds, or the demure Denise herself, fighting to keep her ideas and her love from brimming over โ will help or hinder the fulfillment of his grand ambition.
We started watching it too. We do watch most of the Masterpiece series. This one seems quite like Mr. Selfridge which was on a few months ago as far as setting and time period. Being originally from Britain we love all the British drama and most of the comedy shows.
Linda, I missed Mr. Selfridge:( My hubby likes shoot em up shows so I seldom stumble across anything I like unless he is out of town. I can’t wait to see where this series goes.
We stared to watch it, but for some reason, couldn’t get into it. But I think we’ll give it another chance. It may have the sort of restless mood we were in!

Claudia
Claudia, I think you should give it another go. I thought it was quite funny, and loved how people held their tongue, unlike people today.
Whoops! That should be ‘started.’
Thanks I’ll have to watch this…I too watch very little tv, I mean the Kardassians (misspelled I know but who cares) come on. I think it is so scary what kids watch today, throw Honey Boo Boo and Duck Dynasty in the garbage pile where they belong!
Rondell, I watch very little TV too it is hard to find anything good anymore.
Well, I am heading straight to the telly to find it!! Thanks!
xo Kris
Kris, I know you will love it and if you don’t find today episode watch it online. I provided the link in the post.
I did see this episode…. I think I may be hooked!!! Love the costumes…. the era… the store decor!!! Alllll of it.. and it does appear to have a good story line!!! Missing Downton Abbey as well……. I think…. that is… assuming no one else gets killed off!!!! ๐
Terri, I know what you mean, there won’t be any characters left at Downton Abbey at the rate they are picking them of. So glad to hear you love the new show too:)
Dawn
We watched it too and are hooked!
I hope it continues to be good because
it’s so hard to find anything worth watching, for sure.
Kim, so glad you are hooked. I think we need more shows like this now days, what is on is just horrible not sure how they classify it as entertainment.
Oh rats — I am just realizing that I missed this last night. I had really hoped to watch it, and now, I don’t even know what I was doing to keep me from it??? Anyway, I clicked on your link, and it looks like that only goes to “previews” or “clips”. I hope I will be able to watch in on-line before the next episode. LOVE Downton Abbey, and can’t wait for it to return! Mr. Selfridge was interesting from the retail side of things… seeing all his great schemes to make things sell. But… I didn’t like how quickly it went “downhill” in some of the other storylines. Wonder if it will be back?
Sally you can see the whole episode online here is the link http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/masterpiece/watch-online/
Hi Dawn, No, I haven’t seen it but it sounds like I’d surely like it. Thanks for the info on it. Thank you also for popping in to see me.
You are the sweetie,
Shelia ๐
I loved the show but was really amazed that it carries the same setting and story lines as Mr. Selfridge. However, I was delighted to find it and look forward to the next episode. Masterpiece is almost the only TV I watch anymore.
Glad you are spreading the word.,
Connie, I have heard others mention Mr. Selfridge but have never seen it. I must have missed it on it’s first run.
Sounds right up my alley Dawn. Thanks for the scoop and for taking the time to give us some back story. Can’t wait to start watching!
xoxo,
Kim
Kim, I hope you like it:)
Hi Dawn, I actually came across this post while searching for some info on this series ๐
My 16 year old and I just watched the first 2 episodes of The Paradise this week on PBS.org, and I think we’re hooked! We don’t have television, so we have to wait until each episode is broadcast on television before they put it up to watch on the PBS website. That’s also how we watched Downton, so I always had to avoid what everyone was saying about the current episode until they got it up on the website! haha
Have you ever seen the series “Lark Rise to Candleford” ? It has some of the same actors, and is another series we enjoyed very much.
Jeanette, So glad you are enjoying this series. I tape them and watch them during the week when I get a chance so I am always behind on them too. I have never heard of “Lark Rise to Candleford”, I will look for it. I normally watch tv on my ipad or iphone on the way home from football games. I ride the cheer bus and always have time to watch about 2 hours of tv. I will give it a go if I can find all the episodes:) Thanks for the suggestion.
OMG thanks for sharing about this I love these shows I just watched the whole first series and the first episode in the secoNd season on watchtvseries.net they show the second episode of the second season available for viewing but it’s not allowing me to view not sure what’s going on with that. Do any of you guys know where to find it and how many seasons are available at this point? Thanks a million
Irene, this is the first season and there has only been 3 episodes so far. Click on the link in this post and it will take you to a place to watch them all.
What a super show! But there hasn’t been anything after the last episode in November. When does the 3rd(?) season start? I don’t care for Mr. Selfridge half as much. PS I’m glad to read that others found The Paradise equally enchanting ๐
CC I haven’t heard when the next season starts yet, but I will do a post when I find out.
