Easy Porch Decor With Black and White Reversible Rug
TODAY I’M SHARING MY EASY TO DO PORCH DECOR WITH A REVERSIBLE BLACK AND WHITE RUG. SIMPLE FARMHOUSE LOOK AND EASY TO MAINTAIN ALL SUMMER LONG NO MATTER HOW HOT IT GETS!
Simple is the name of the game, and the decor this Spring. I wanted to add a little color to the porch entrance we use every day but didn’t want it to look overdone. I always enjoy beautiful flowers, but the upkeep is a bigger project than I’m willing to tackle this years, so to keep it simple I went with Boston Ferns, galvanized stools, and a reversible black and white outdoor rug.
You’ve heard me mention in past post how I snatch those $5 ferns every year from Home Depot and incorporate them into my decorating every year. Well here they are, for $5 ya just can’t beat them. One reason I like to decorate with ferns is they take up a lot of space, they’re easy to care for (I actually am quite neglectful with them when it comes to watering), and they’re cheap.
I happened to have found the large olive buckets at Menards last season on clearance for $7, so you guessed it they jumped right into my cart and wanted to go home with me. I first had the ferns sitting on the deck it’s self but the more I stood back and looked I felt like they needed a little height, so into the basement I went and found the galvanized bars stools that we never use and that was just enough to bring them to the height I liked.
It’s always so windy at our house so I added paver bricks to the bottom of the olive buckets to keep them from blowing off when the wind decides to become gusty. Oh! and that black and white rug is from Walmart of all places, and it’s reversible. I purchased 3 of them, one for each entrance. I tend to like it on the black side better than the white but I decided when it gets dirty on one side I’ll just flip it over. Here’s a little trick, I use my staple gun and staple the rug to the deck board. That way no one catches a toe and falls and the wind doesn’t’ blow it away.
Did you notice the bird nest in the fern? I didn’t have them on the porch even 24 hours and a bird had already made it’s nest. I kept seeing one sitting on the homemade grapevine wreath all day long and thought it was strange I’d never seen a bird sit there before. Well now I know why, that birdie was busy building a nest and needed a place close by to guard it while she or he rested.
So now I have to be careful when I water the ferns, I don’t want the nest to get all soggy before the bird has time to lay it’s eggs. It couldn’t have picked a worse spot, this is the entrance we use everyday so if it was looking for a quite spot this isn’t the one.
I’m interested in seeing the front porch awning as an entity. It may be what we need for ours!
I like the idea of using a brick in the bottom of your containers on the porch due to wind. We just move to Flagstaff, AZ and the wind does blow. I will put to use your great advice!
Thanks!
I’ve been thinking about the ferns too for this year, by July I’m ready to quit watering! Great ideas you have for the buckets and rug!
I hang a fern on my porch every year. Every year for the past 3 years a bird builds a nest in it. It’s a fun thing for us to watch, especially the grandkids!
The porch looks great with your “deals”!!!….I have 10 hanging ferns on my porches and they ALL have nests in them….they seem to come back every year…. Now I am hoping the large black birds do not come back…many came in and ate most of the eggs in the nest.
I love this! It looks simple and effortless, not overdone. I especially like the use of those stools there. Brilliant!
Cheryl I originally purchased those stools to use at our kitchen island but quickly discarded those, they are so uncomfortable theres no way we wanted to sit there for long.
