Vintage Grain Sack Runner from a Drop Cloth

Here’s another simple and inexpensive gift idea that you can make at home in about an hour, a Vintage, Raw Edge, Grain Sack Runner from a Drop Cloth. Everyone loves things made from grain-sacks right now, so why not make a faux for a friend.

Faux Grain Sack Runner Tutorial

I make mine 18″ wide and use your own judgement for the length. Most people use them as island or table runners so keep that in mind for your size. First gather your supplies: you will need a drop cloth, paint color of your choice, textile medium, painters tape, paint brush or roller, and a sewing machine.

I cut two pieces the same size so the runner is a heavier weight, and tape off the stripes I want to mimic a grain sack. Stipple the paint onto the drop cloth and let dry. Set with an iron according to the directions on the back of the medium.

Place right sides facing outside and top stitch around the edge, when washed (follow directions on the back of the medium) it will have a nice fuzzy raw edge. I put the grain sack stripes on both sides and make the project reversible, if someone spills something on it at the last minute you can just turn it over and continue on without anyone knowing.

Grain Sack Runner

Currently I am using this one on my kitchen island, I may not want to give it up as a gift.  If you missed the Grain Sack Coasters click here for an easy tutorial on making them.

Kris, Merry Christmas to you also. Did you get the ice storm last night? We are without power and the projected date for restoration is December 27th or 28th.
