I wanted to get this list out before Black Friday, and while you’re all still planning your Christmas shopping list. This is a list of my top 10 favorite things for the photographer/blogger in your life or it can even be things on your want list. I’ve listed them from least to most expensive. I personally own each of these items and use most of them daily.
For $2.15 this is the best little gadget ever. It’s a Bubble Level that mounts into the hot shoe of any DSLR camera. I like to shoot from the hip and I mean literally hold my camera at hip height and take amazing shots from a different perspective, and this little items assures Im holding the camera level.
This is one of my all time favorite, simple to use, and inexpensive photo editing program, PicMonkey. There’s a free version, but for $4.99 per month you have access to all it’s extra features. If you find Photoshop or something similar hard to learn and just don’t have the time to devote to it, I encourage you to invest the small amount of money and use PicMonkey.
A Wired Remote Shutter Release (make sure you purchase the one that fits your camera….. Nikon or Canon) for $5.99 will help if you tend to have camera shake. You can mount your camera to a tripod, connect the cable, and stand back with the shutter release in your hand and just push the button. This is great for taking family photos, still shots for us bloggers, or dim lighting when you need your shutter to stay open longer but can’t get a clear shot by hand holding it.
There’s not much to say about a Camera and Lense Cleaning Kit for $7.99 but it’s a must have item. If you have the kit it’s a good idea to get into the habit of cleaning your equipment on a regular basis. I try and clean my lenses and camera mirrors every time I switch to a different lense. It’s quite amazing how much dust they collect.
This is just too fun to pass up a Camera Shaped Memory Stick for $14.98. How cute is that?
The Umbrella Light Kit for $49.50 comes in handy when you have photos that have to be done and the lighting conditions are not ideal. A lot can be done with photo editing software but nothing takes the place of good lighting. I like that this kit folds up into a compact carrying case. I take mine with me when I do indoor senior portraits.
Another affordable, more sophisticated photo editing software if Lightroom for $142.99. You can pay a monthly fee and download it or try the 30 day free trial first to see how you like it, I prefer owning the disk so I can use it on several computers. It’s much easier to learn than photoshop, but also can’t do what photoshop can do. I use this program everyday for my blog.
This is the best invention ever it’s a Spyder Color Calibrator for $149.99. It suction cups to the front of your computer and all by itself it actually calibrates the color of your computer monitor based on the setting you choose. For instance I use a professional lab for all my photos and I have my monitor calibrated to their printer settings. By doing this I am assured that what I see is what I get, the colors on my monitor are exactly the same as the colors on the labs printer. If you don’t have specific setting you can just let the machine do a standard color calibration. If you use a MAC the colors are normally spot on, they may need a slight adjustment but nothing like a PC. I do this once a month to my computer to insure accuracy at all times.
This little gem is a bit pricey but worth every penny and it’s something you’ll never need to replace or upgrade the Canon 50mm 1.2L lens. If you use this on a full frame camera you can almost get away without owning another lens. It will take great macro photos as well as portraits.
If Santa has deep pockets make sure and put this on your list the Canon EF 24-70 mm 2.8L Lens for $1,799.00. If you can only own one lense this is the one. I use this more than any other lense in my bag, it’s perfect for close ups and whole rooms shots and the glass is unbelievably clear for family portraits. I seldom take this one off my camera anymore. It’s the best walk around lense when you only have room for one on vacation too.
Pick up a few of these things for your favorite shutter bug in the family.
