Annual & Perennial Herb Garden Cheat Sheet
For the life of me I can’t remember which herbs are annual and which are perennials. Every spring I wander out the herb garden and watch for some signs of green coming up. So far I am seeing lemon balm and oregano. I do keep my plant markers out all year round so I remember where each herb is planted, but this year I decided to get smart and make myself a cheat sheet to remember which plants to purchase at the garden center. I’m not sure what took me so long to come up with this brilliant idea, but the lightbulb finally turned on and I’m going to go with it.
I have a thing for rocks, I know it’s strange but that’s just me. If I find a rock that strikes my fancy I have to bend down, inspect it, and put it in my pocket. I’m like a 5 year old boy I guess. A few years back I decided to use some of my flatter rock as my herb markers. I used a paint pen to write the name with and then gave them a coat of clear spray paint. Nothing fancy, but it gets the job done. I nestle them in the soil next to each plant and even after our harsh winter they still look as good as the day I made them.
My Aunt started an herb garden this year so I have divided my perennial plants and moved sections over to her place. I normally put a post on facebook asking if anyone would like a shovel full it’s a great way to divide your plants and start a new gardener out. I’ll have to put a post out about strawberries again this year mine are out of control and the runners need to find a new home. The best part is when mine quit producing I hit up my friends that I gave those runner to for a new batch of strawberry plants, it works out perfect. You are not alone! My sisters, mom and me all love rocks and have many collections. Our kids have been known to say to their friends to watch when we get to a beach because we will begin to scan the ground (and hardly look up at the water, heh). I save all of the rocks I dig out of the garden, too. There is a big pile by the greenhouse that I use for many things including painted plant markers. Rock lovers unite!

Where I live in Wisconsin Rosemary and parsley never make it through the winter. I bring a parsley plant in and it grows nicely all winter. Rosemary always dies on me indoors. Parsley is a biannual plant. After the second year it goes to seed and gets woody.
