Digging The Pond

LATE ONE EVENING HUBBY DECIDED TO WORK ON DIGGING THE POND. IT’S SOMETHING THAT HAS TO BE DONE EVERY FEW YEARS TO KEEP IT FROM FILLING IN!

Please bare with these photos, they were snapped at dusk and it was quickly turning dark it was the only time hubby had to dig.

Let me tell you a little about out pond. It’s spring fed so as quickly as hubby digs it fills up; which is nice for keeping it always looking clean. It’s not a pond we use it’s mainly for wildlife. Although my kids used it as their swimming hole when they were little. We had a pool but boys would rather throw mud and swim with the fish so the pool was taken down.

We see deer and turkeys almost every day drinking from the pond and it’s stocked with fish naturally from ducks landing on the pond carrying fish eggs on their feet and under belly. Every now and again the boys go fishing from the shore. They catch and release so it’s nothing we ever keep or eat.

I don’t mow around the pond either. We keep it natural (one less thing for me to maintain).

Hubby had the excavator digging our oldest sons drain field at his new house so while he had it out he decided it was a good time to dig out the pond again. It’s amazing how much it can fill in over the years. It always looks nice to have the edges clean and neat again. It’s quite deep too, deep enough you can’t dive to the bottom and I’m not sure I’d want too.

I have a fear of something grabbing me and holding me under. I’ve never been one who enjoys swimming. Now when we had a pool I’d float around on a raft but lakes and ponds freak me out.

It’s not a pretty, well maintained pond but the wildlife sure seem to enjoy it and that’s all that matters to me.

    1. Cheryl I sure enjoy seeing all the animals and the same deer drink from it every day. It’s fun to see them have babies and bring them back from year to year.

    1. Carol it sure does and I hope once we downsize it’s all less work.
