Farm Fresh Eggs and Spring Flowers
Since Spring isn’t making it’s appearance in my neck of the woods I decided to force it a little with some store bought Spring Flowers, you know the kind you find in the grocery store. I was quite surprised by the variety they had on hand and for $13 I felt it was worth bringing a little cheer to my day.
I was able to make 4 bouquets with them and use them in several areas of my home (upcoming posts). I’m not sure how long they will last but for now it is the only sign of Spring that I am seeing and I am enjoying the bright colors it brings to my decor.
With our winter being so harsh it’s made the chickens stop laying. I normally get all my eggs from my bestie or my sons girlfriend, I got a little panic stricken when I was down to one egg in the basket. Luckily a local organic store just got a batch in from the Amish. I called first to find out if they had 4 dozen, had them hold them for me, and rushed right out to get them. Just another reason I need Spring to arrive here.
I don’t know why but I refuse to eat store bought eggs, but I do. They just don’t have the flavor or color of a fresh egg, if I have to I will bake with store bought but only as a last resort. If you ever have the opportunity to try some of these delicious, fresh eggs you will never go back to store bought either. I would love having chickens of my own but hubby says NO, he had a bad experience when with chickens when he was a kid. His dad decided to raise them in their basement and all he can remember is the horrible smell they gave off and he is turned off to raising chickens. I guess I can’t blame him, but I assured him I would be keeping them in the coop.

I would love to try fresh eggs. I do buy the organic free range ones at the store. I love your pretty flowers and I am buying them at the store, too to add some spring inside.
Kim, you should look for a local farmer to buy eggs from. I think we are all resorting to store bought flowers right now.
I cannot go to the grocery store or Trader Joe’s without coming home with flowers or an orchid…your flowers are so very beautiful in the blue Ball jar…love the color combination of the green flowers with the blue!…Yes, I love fresh eggs, but not real easy to get around here..I enjoy them when I am at my sister’s house….but I will just have to settle for the organic/cage free eggs at the grocery store…a close second…Have a great day, and so wonderful “partying” with you Dawn!
Shirley, I wish we had a Trader Joe’s around here I would be just like you and bring home flowers every time.
Dawn, Your jars with spring flowers are so cheery! Love them paired with farm fresh eggs which I haven’t had in about 30 years since my grandparents had chickens ๐
Mary, wow that’s a long time without farm fresh eggs. You should look for a local farmer and start getting them again.
I wish I could get farm fresh eggs but there is just no one around here that sells them. In the summer I can get them at a weekly farmer’s market and I can hardly wait until it starts back up. Stunning photos!
Ann, darn no farmer in sight. I just can’t make myself do the store bought thing, so I guess I would suffer without eggs all winter long.
I actually get most of floral bouquets from the grocery. They really have a nice variety nowadays with great prices. I get my fresh eggs from the farmer’s market in the summer but not the winter. Lovely photos.
Kim, The grocery store is a great place to get flowers and you can do it while grocery shopping making it easier on you. I don’t always have the time to hit an extra store, so it works out perfect for me.
Good morning Dawn,
I have had fresh eggs and you are so right they do taste different from store bought. I can only get fresh eggs here in the summer during the Farmer’s Market so it is store bought for winter. Love your pretty spring flowers. Nice treat for yourself.
Kris
Kris, did you know farm fresh eggs would probably last all winter long in your fridge?
A beautiful Spring vignette! Your pretty flowers certainly bring cheer to my day, too! Thanks!
Thank you Becca ๐ Is there any sign of spring in your area yet?
I agree, fresh from the nest eggs are the best. Raised our own for years until we moved..Store bought ones just don’t have the flavor or the dark rich colored yolks.
MaryEllen, I would love to raise my own, I bet you sure enjoyed it and the lovely eggs they left you ๐
I so agree about fresh eggs. I just can’t eat store bought eggs anymore. And forget about ordering sunny side up eggs in a restaurant. Nothing beats that beautiful golden colored yolk of a fresh egg!
Kathryn, I know whatever they sell in stores is not an egg. LOL
Spring has not quite sprung here either. But today we are having mild but overcast weather. I hope it comes your way soon! I absolutely love love love your egg basket! I agree that fresh farm eggs are the best. The yolks are so orange and delicious! I need to find a cute little wire basket and keep my eggs in one. What a pretty spring post, Dawn! Thanks for doing so much to get our Simply Spring Tour together! xo
Yvonne, I found that wire basket at Big Lots and it was cheap. It’s going to be 50 today so I hope some of our snow melts.
Chickens in the Basement sounds like the latest horror movie! Here’s to hoping spring gets here right away so you can whip up an omelette to go with your perfect centerpiece!
Kelly
Kelly, I know who puts chickens inside the house. I’m afraid I would have objected to that for sure.
in the basement!!! ๐ he must not have been a country boy, uh? Dawn, your photos are just beautiful and just looking at them screams spring to me…even if the weather is cold.
Laura, yes a country boy and maybe a little nuts. LOL
My Dad wouldn’t eat chicken, dirty yard bird he called it lol. He did eat eggs though. Our neighbors got chickens last year and so we are able to get fresh eggs whenever we want them, although I try not to ask too often, lol. They have been laying all winter down here in Indy in spite of the bitter cold. Love your pretty spring flowers and I do need to go to Trader Joe’s… ๐
Penney, that’s what my Grandpa called chickens too, lol. You are lucky to have a close neighbor, I wouldn’t hesitate asking them especially if you are paying for them.
Dawn, I’m so glad you have some fresh flowers to bring a little spring to your cabin. I love them in the blue jars. I recently had farm fresh eggs and couldn’t believe the difference in the color of the yolk and the taste. I totally want to get chickens now.
Adina @ Simply Country Life
Adina, I want chickens badly too but hubby says no and he never tells me no so I know he really hates them. LOL
Love your fresh eggs and flowers photos- so pretty!
Thank you for dropping by today Courtney ๐
Just beautiful! I buy grocery store flowers all winter long and make them into smaller bouquets. They are so pretty and well worth the small expense. Your photos are amazing – they look like little paintings.
Stacey, glad to hear others buy the ones in grocery stores too. I guess they don’t have to come from a florist for us to enjoy them.
Hi Dawndie! Oh, the fresh eggs look so pretty as well as your pretty flowers. I haven’t had fresh eggs in a long time. I know there is a big difference compared to story bought ones.
Be a sweetie,
Shelia;)
Shelia, thank you for stopping by. I passed more flowers in the grocery store today but didn’t buy, the others are holding up for quite some time.
I got my first taste of a ‘real’ egg last summer when my neighbour shared some of her chicken eggs with me. I have had a hard time with grocery store eggs ever since. I try to buy my eggs from another friend that raises chickens instead. I won’t have to for much longer though…. I am getting my very own chicks next month! So excited!!
Laurie, Lucky girl you… I bet you are thrilled. I so want chickens.
So wonderful how just a few Spring flowers will bring some cheer into the house.
My FIL raised eggs and chickens before he passed. You’re right there is no comparison
in the flavor of store bought and farm fresh. And the beautiful colours of the
farm eggs too….
Kim, yes it is amazing the color difference in fresh eggs, Im not sure what they do to those ones raised in a cage and not sure I want to but there’s no nutritional value in them.
Beautiful photos as always! I completely agree with you… Nothing like farm fresh eggs… or milk…or produce (the list can go on and on). We were pretty self-sufficient on the dairy farm that I grew up on with our own orchards, chickens, etc. and I sure miss the good tasting stuff. Chickens in the basement? That could not have smelled good ๐
Kristen, what a wonderful time growing up on a farm. About 2 years ago we planted an orchard on our property, so I am now waiting for the trees to produce.
I don’t think I’ve ever had farm fresh eggs, I’ll have to ask my husband about getting some fresh eggs. He wouldn’t like chickens either he has told me about when he was a kid and they used to chase and peck him. lol
Love your flowers in the Ball jar!
Rondell, my neighbor had a chicken when I was growing up that could chase us and jump on our backs so I know how your hubby feels.
Dawn those flowers look so pretty in the blue Ball jars…your photos are stunning! My cousin gives me fresh eggs all the time.
Martina you are so lucky to get fresh eggs ๐
Dawn, My daughter, Christina, just got a chicken coop on sale at Family Farm and Home. She has gotten with another relative that still lives on a farm, so lucky for us, we have someone who can pass on some knowledge. This might detour my flower and tree planting plans.
Carole, lucky Christina I am so envious of her getting chickens and you getting the eggs. How wonderful ๐
Everything is looking fresh and crisp. I love the picture of the basket of eggs. Your wildflowers look lovely. I picked flowers from the garden yesterday and included some yellow weeds. I love them in my bouquet and will not be so quick to pull the weeds in the future because I love the flowers.
Carol, I use weeds all the time and call them flowers. They don’t have to come from a fancy nursery to be beautiful.
Dawn,
Just had to pop in one more time to tell you how fantastic your photos are–on all the posts! You have a great eye and can sure work the camera. My Dad was a photographer by hobby and taught photography, so I know it takes not only a good camera but a person who sees a good photo where others don’t. You have that magic!
Drew, How sweet of you. Thank you so much ๐
In truth, you cannot find any other cutting knife on this planet as being a Henckels blade fixed.
It was never easy and always involved me cutting myself.
Never put wet cutlery into a wooden knife blopck because wood
will absor the water and then there is the danger of introducing mold that will cause damage.
