Spray Painted Shutters

Why Purchase New House Shutters When You Can Update Them Using Spray Paint for Under $20. Spray Paint Can Change The Look of The Whole Home and Give It a Fresh New Look. CreativeCainCabin.comWe had a warmer day yesterday, 60 so I took the shutters off our guest house…..which is now our rental home and updated their look with spray paint. Earlier in the day I was at Menards and priced new shutter, it was $20 a pair which I didn’t think was bad but I decided I would try and spray paint one of them first to see how it looked before investing in new. The shutters were burgundy when we first bought the house and over the years…probably in the late 80’s I painted them hunter green (yep I’m dating myself for sure). Then the house sat and the shutters faded and I didn’t much care what color they were. The siding on the house is gray so I decided basic black sounded like my best color choice. After grabbing 6 cans of RustOleum Satin Canyon Black Spray Paint I headed home to take the shutters down and get painting.

CreativeCainCabin.comI had 6 shutters and one large star to paint, and only used 3 full cans of spray paint. So it only cost me $12 for the whole project and took less than 30 minutes to take them down and have everything painted with 2 coats. I couldn’t believe how well it covered. Maybe it covered so well because there wasn’t a huge color change, but I’m quite pleased with the results. And the price was fantastic.

CreativeCainCabin.comThe tin star hangs in the peak of the house, and as you can see it was in desperate need of an update too. I still have the front door to paint. Currently it’s navy  blue but I’m going to change it to a dark gray, the same gray that’s on the cabin doors. So stay tuned for the shutters on the house and many more updates taking place at the rental.

I’d love to see how the shutters look on the house. Have you posted pics anywhere yet? I’m thinking of switching my faded hunter Green shutters to black, but am not sure how that would look on a medium dark brick house. My husband thinks we should stay with the green, but I want a classy update. Any thoughts on how black shutters would look on brick?

    1. Shelia you cans see the black on my log home here. https://creativecaincabin.com/2016/07/trim-shutters/ I agree with you black is classy and timeless. I’m starting a new series tomorrow so come back and read the post. What I’m doing is having readers send me a photo of their homes exterior and I’ll use photoshop to make the changes your looking for and send the photo back to you. It would be fun to do it to your place.

  7. Hi, I’ve been looking for a way to paint the shutters I have. Did you have to do any prep work before you spray painted them?

    Thanks!

  8. I was thinking about
painting my shutters black .my house is light pinky tan color, my roof is brown, do you think it would look good?

    1. Sheila yes I think it would tone down the pink appearance.

  9. How long were the shutter? Mine are 55″ in length and I have 8. Did the math per can, but I seen you used 3 cans for 6 shutters… just tying to see if I bought enough… had to special order my color. I’m glad I seen this post they look absolutely gorgeous! Just hoping I bought enough paint… my are plastic, but don’t look as long as your. Again your looks amazing! Thanks for your help!

    1. Jody mine were 58″, mine are plastic too and the colors were similar so that helped. They’ve been up for over 3 years now and still look fantastic. If you are going from dark to light or the other way around you may need a second coat.

  10. Hello Dawn

Do I have sand the shutters first or prep them or just spray paint them. Your shutters look absolutely great and I am interested in doing my shutters. I also have window boxes so can I do the same.
