THERE’S NOTING BETTER THAN AN OLD BARELL FILLED WITH BLOOMING FLOWERS. THIS YEAR I ADDED BLUSHING SUSIE BLACK-EYED SUZAN VINE TO OUR LANDSCAPE DESIGN!

I purchased a new camera lens and wanted to try it out and the perfect subject to photography was my whiskey barrel filled with Blushing Susie Black-eyed Susan Vine. For the past few years I’ve had a metal trellis in the middle of the pot with flowers planted in and around it but I wanted to try something new this year.

After wandering around the nursery, up and down every isle several times I decided on this beautiful vine. It came potted in a hanging pot and was already climbing so I had to be very careful unwinding it from the baskets hanger. Once that tedious project was done I planted it in the center of the trellis and attempted to twine it around the sculpture.

After I did the best job I could I gave it a good watering along with a little fertilizer. For several days it looked pretty sad but after a week or so it perked right up and began to flourish. I just can’t believe how full and beautiful it’s became. I think this may be my new favorite look for this barrel.

What a beautiful vine! It looks so happy in your pot! I wonder if it can take the Texas heat – I’ll have to look it up:) thanks for sharing:)

Mary, I know the days it was in the 90’s here it looked a little droopy, so the high temps for extended days may not be good on it.

What a great idea! I’ve bought that same flower in a hanging basket for my mother several times and never once thought of planting it in a container with a trellis. Brilliant!

Barb, Mine came in a container but I pulled it out. It was huge when I purchased it so I know it would fill my pot.

This is beautiful. I’m not familiar with that particular flower and the nurseries around here are pretty well out of everything but petunias, so I’ll keep it in mind for next year. I love climbing plants and flowers.

Pat, this thing gets huge and come in several colors. If you’re looking for a climbing vine that will reseed itself and cover a large area this is the one.
