ORGANIZE

Normally I’ve shared with you all of my organization posts in the month of January. That’s when we all get the bug to de-clutter and get things back in order again. Somehow I’ve been so busy sharing other things that this little project got overlooked.

I don’t mind cooking and baking and I see the need to have the right herbs and spices on hand. My mom for instance would use what she had and if a recipe called for something she didn’t’ have she’d omit it. That’s not me I like to have everything the recipe calls for and I make a home cooked meal every night for my family.

GLASS STORAGE

It’s a small expense in the beginning to purchase all the glass storage bottles but now that I have them I’ll never need to replace them. With wanting to eliminate anything that came in plastic, I wanted everything in clear glass, and everything uniform sizes.

These small spice jars were found on Amazon and their just perfect for storing normal size spices, like the ones you get in the grocery store. I also have a few items I use all the time and need a much bigger quantity on had so I went with these jars for those.

REUSE

The idea of just refilling my little spice jars when they get empty is much more appealing to me. Online spice ordering can come in zipper bags or if you go to a whole food store you can buy by the pound and bring your own jar. I also like the idea of things not going bad or getting stale. They get used up quicker in smaller quantities.

At first I stored them in my pantry just randomly, more by how pretty the color flow was but I quickly figured out if I was ever to find anything quickly the spices needed to be in alphabetical order. I put a post up on IG and everyone’s vote was to alphabetize them. I’m just wondering how I got along all those years without doing it this way? You’ll be glad to know I’m all organized now, LOL.

I took all the plastic before bottles to the recycle center and I plan on never going back to them. I use a Sharpie to write it’s contents but if you’d prefer you could print or buy pretty labels. I just like the ability to run these through the dishwasher when they’re empty and re-label them when I need to. I used the same method on my baking cupboard jars.

It’s so nice to have my kitchen all back in order again. It’s a task I tackle once a year and it always feels good to have it nice and pretty again. Sometimes I just go into the kitchen and open a drawer just to admire how neat and organized it is.  Call me crazy but it makes my heart happy!

  1. Awesome post! I’m off to find a white Sharpie. Thanks.

    1. Jan make sure you get the water based one. You can find it at Hobby Lobby I know.

  2. I’ve alphabetized my spices for 50 years and can’t imagine doing it any other way. Friends and family have teased me about that for years, but I haven’t cared one bit. I too got rid of all metal spice cans and plastic containers in my pantry. I use glass storage jars for everything food related.

    1. Pat, I have no idea why I never alphabetized mine, it seems silly now not to have done it. I keep food in glass too. Hubby loves plastic so I have to keep a few bowls for him but other than that it’s vintage pyrex and mason jars for storage.

  3. I love this idea. I just need to find a spot for Steve to store all his spices. He ends up leaving them on the counter and it just looks messy.

    1. Carol you’re so creative you’ll find a spot for sure.

  4. Nothing crazy about a happy heart, healthy foods and etc., and organization! Bravo! I’m gonna tackle this issue asap, like, starting with acquiring the glass containers as the budget allows. Great post!!

    1. Lisa, yipeee I bet you can’t wait to get started.

Is there any way to darken the font in your writings? The writing are so light I struggle to see and read it.

    1. Yes, Please do – I struggle with the light font also.

      1. Cindy, I’m checking into making it darker, just give me some time 🙂 It’s in the coding and I’ll have to do a little poking around.

    2. Sue that surprises me the font is a charcoal gray. It will take me a while to go into the code to see if it can be changed but I’ll take a look and see what I can do 🙂

  6. Thank you, Dawn, for the inspiration – I am switching to all uniform glass containers now! Do you have an online source you’d recommend to purchase spices?

    1. Cindy so glad to hear you’re joining in on the spice jar organization. I purchase from a local health food store or from vitacost online.

  7. Hi Dawn! I found your spice organization blog because I was following your baking cabinet! LOVE!~! I would like to know WHERE you keep your spice jars? In the cabinet? I was thinking of doing the 6 oz square jars with dispenser lids, but I noticed when I used a 3-tier rack, if I need a spice that is on the 3rd tier in the back, I knock over the first 2 rows. I would like to figure out a better way. I am rethinking using the hinged jars, but I prefer the 7 oz size.

I would really like to know where you keep your spices. Look forward to hearing back! I love following your blog now too! 🙂
