Anyone else out the have a thing against those chemical filled mosquito sprays out there on the market? I just can’t bring myself to use them. If anyone near me even sprays them I choke up and feel like I can’t breath. Even when my son was little I always used natural remedies for keep the mosquitos off him.

We happen to live on a hill and it’s always windy so mosquitos normally aren’t a thing at our place. This year it’s been a different story. We’ve had a few weeks of extremely hot, muggy weather, with absolutely no air movement, with consistent rain fall. Apparently it’s a mosquitos paradise.

I like to spend my time outside in the summer months picking the garden, mowing, and sitting on the front porch reading or catching up on Hulu shows but it’s not very enjoyable when I’m battling the bugs. I certainly don’t want to be eaten up by mosquito bites either. Two of my Aunt have already had West Niles Virus this year from mosquito bites.

So here’s what I do: I keep a big pots of the herb Lemon Balm outside every entrance of the cabin. I grab a fistful of the leaves when I go out the door and rub them on any exposed skin; except my face. Then I mist myself from head to toe with this recipe:

  • 4 oz Vodka
  • 5 drops lemon balm oil
  • 5 drops peppermint oil
  • 5 drops citronella oil
  • 10 drops lavender oil
  • 5 drops cedarwood oil
  • 5 drops eucalyptus oil

I put it all in a mister: here’s the one I use MISTER and mist as often as necessary. Because of the Vodka it feels cool and refreshing. I’ve even been know to use it while out golfing just because of it’s cooling effect. This recipe won’t work for hours like a commercial bug spray; you’ll have to mist yourself often but to me it’s worth not having all those chemicals on my skin.
